Giesecke & Devrient is an internationally leading technology provider with its headquarters in Munich, Germany and 58 subsidiaries, joint ventures, and associated companies in 32 countries worldwide. G&D had around 10,500 employees as of the end of 2011 and generated 1.635 billion euros in sales in fiscal 2011 – of which 87 percent was earned outside Germany.
G&D was founded by Hermann Giesecke and Alphonse Devrient in Leipzig – a city with a rich printing and publishing heritage – as the “Officin für Geld- und Werthpapiere” in 1852. Today, G&D is a family-owned company with its roots in Germany and operations all over the world. This year marks its 160th anniversary.

Research and development have always been a top priority for G&D. The Group now has 1.063 developers working on new products and processes. R&D spending totaled around 119 million euros in fiscal 2011. All told, G&D holds around 6.700 patents and patent applications worldwide.
