Paper-embedded, multi-functional authenticity protection

Security threads are an efficient and reliable security element. They are easily recognized by the general public and offer a high level of protection against counterfeiting thanks to the complex techniques used to produce them. Security threads are inserted into the paper at the cylinder mould during the paper production process – either fully covered by the paper or as a window thread that is visible on the surface of the paper at regular intervals.

Security threads offer a wide range of applications and are versatile in their design. Striking holographic and color-shift effects are very popular here, as they allow the public to very quickly and easily authenticate a banknote. Security threads are up to 5 mm wide and also contain multi-functional characteristics such as holograms, demetallization, UV luminescence, and machine readability.

G&D can draw on many years of experience in the manufacture of security threads. Because G&D also produces banknote and security paper, all threads are optimally adapted for embedding in paper.

RollingStar – brilliant, distinctive and very moving

G&D | Security threads in banknotes

Clear authentication and high dynamics – G&D has rolled these requirements into an innovative security thread technology. RollingStar is based on tiny microscopic mirrors plus ColourShift, a technology which provides extreme protection against counterfeiting.

Security at first sight

Brilliant, distinctive and very moving: RollingStar security threads enhance the beauty of security. The combination of a defined movement sequence and striking colour shift when the banknote is tilted is a real eye-catcher and ideal for immediate level-one authentication. Distinctive effects can be achieved such as the striking “rolling bar” effect where a truly dynamic colour shift reflection travels over the surface.

Combining beauty with functionality

RollingStar security threads can be combined with a variety of functional properties such as clear text and machine-readable magnetism (MultiCode). RollingStar security threads are integrated into the paper during its production. Even after long periods in circulation, they remain firmly embedded in the substrate and thus ensure the banknotes’ long-term security.

Synchronization with optically variable effects

RollingStar security threads can be harmonized in colour and movement. This synchronization comparatively simplifies banknote feature authentication.

Brilliant and distinctive color changes

G&D | Security threads in banknotes

ColourShift threads carry stunningly brilliant colors and feature a distinctive change in color when tilted. G&D offers several color change effects for customization to a specific banknote design.

ColourShift/ColourFix threads take the concept of the ColourShift thread even further. While the ColourShift surface clearly changes color when tilted, neighboring ColourFix areas remain fixed with the same color. On viewing a banknote, the user can easily distinguish the unchanged reference color and the color-shifting area, which typically includes the reference color in its design.

Unlike standard ColourShift threads, the two areas of the ColourShift/ColourFix thread make it possible to use customer-specific designs. The dual-area concept supports highly attractive designs and eases the authentication of the security feature.

All G&D's ColourShift threads have the advantage of being able to carry highly transparent demetallized areas boosting their appearance and security.

To further enhance the security of the thread to protect against counterfeiting, security threads can be equipped with covert security features. These include machine-readable properties such as magnetism and electrical conductivity, or elements visible under UV or polarized light.

Holographic security threads are attractive and eye-catching

G&D | Security threads in banknotes

Holographic threads are an attractive and eye-catching security feature for protection against counterfeiting that enjoys high public acceptance. G&D uses the very latest holographic technology, giving room for multiple optical effects.

Holographic threads incorporate diffractive surface elements with variable colors and patterns. They are designed to particular customer needs. This includes effects which simulate a movement, a change in shape, or three-dimensional elements. Typically the holograms are combined with demetallized areas boosting their appearance and security.

To further enhance the security of the thread to protect against counterfeiting, holographic threads can be equipped with covert security features. These include machine-readable properties such as magnetic and electrical conductivity, or elements visible under UV, polarized or laser light.

Demetallized threads offer high contrast and resolution

G&D | Security threads in banknotes

Demetallized security threads are characterized by transparent areas on a metalized foil surface. These transparent areas communicate information to the observer viewing the banknote or security document through transmitted light.

The process of demetallization ensures optimum contrast and high resolution, and is inherently secure. The large range of design options ensures that a thread is unique for a denomination and serves as a fortified barrier against counterfeiting.

To further enhance the security of the thread, demetallized threads can be equipped with covert security features. These include magnetic, machine-readable properties, electrical conductivity, or elements visible under UV or polarized light.

Printed security threads individualized with Country Codes

G&D | Security threads in banknotes

Security threads printed with country codes are an efficient way to individualize and protect security documents against counterfeiting. CountryCode threads for passports and other ID documents show the flag and the name of the designated country. G&D implements effective designs that are secure against counterfeiting using micro and/or multicolor print.

To further enhance the protection against counterfeiting, these security threads can be equipped with covert security features. These include elements visible under UV light.
